2015 Stonier W-WB Pinot Noir
There was no hesitation in deciding to release a 2015 vintage of the Windmill Vineyard whole bunch component (W-WB) with the ripeness and depth of tannins, together with the fruit weight coming together in a way that we were thrilled about.
The fruit from the low trellis section of the vineyard was picked on March 24, one week earlier than the remaining Windmill Vineyard fruit. Fermented in a two tonne fermenter, the ferment was essentially left alone for almost 3 weeks, prior to pressing and maturation in French oak barriques (65% new) for 9 months. The wine was bottled without filtration in February, 2016.
Bright red fruits are at the fore, with glacé cherry, five spice and spicy ginger, but there also plenty of dark fruits brooding underneath, becoming more apparent on the palate. A slight textural viscosity adds weight and is common with whole bunch fermented wines. The tannins are multi-dimensional, but they are well and truly entrenched within the framework of a very layered and complex Pinot Noir wine.
