2014 Stonier Thompson Vineyard Chardonay
Planted in 1978, the Thompson Vineyard is the founding vineyard of Stonier, and one of the pioneer vineyards of the Mornington Peninsula Wine Region.
It is always exciting when we pick and press the fruit from a vineyard that holds such a special place in the history of Stonier. It is even more so when the fruit quality is so exceptional. Despite the low crops, the old vines yielded 2.6 tonnes from their 0.65 hectares – a very modest crop at only 4.1 tonnes/hectare, but well above average for the low yielding 2014 season.
Pressed as whole bunches and fermented in puncheons (33% new), we decided against malo-lactic fermentation, with the aim of promoting purity of fruit. After 9 months, the puncheons were blended and matured for a further month in the same barrels, prior to bottling in February, 2015. Only 55 dozen made.
