2016 Jack Ridge Pinot Noir
The Jack’s Ridge Vineyard is located in the hills north of Merricks (close to Red Hill) on a cool protected site. At only 0.8 hectares, it is one of our smallest Pinot Noir vineyards, but also one of our most individual. Located on a northerly facing ridge of red basalt, the Pinot Noir from Jack’s Ridge ripens about one week earlier than Red Hill.
2016 was a relatively warm (not hot) season, but incredibly dry, with almost half the normal growing season rainfall. The warm and dry start to the season ensured an early vintage, with the Pinot Noir at Jack’s Ridge hand-picked on the 5th March, over a week earlier than average. The small crop of 4 tonnes (5tonnes/ha) was gently de-stemmed and fermented in 2 x 2t open fermenters, with a mix of daily pump-overs and hand plunging used over the 15 days of time on skins. After pressing, the wine was then matured in French oak puncheons (17% new) for 8 months, prior to bottling without filtration in December.
