2020 Stonier Chardonnay
The grapes for Stonier Chardonnay were selected from several Stonier long term vineyards, centred near Merricks, Balnarring and Merricks North. With the long history of Stonier on the Mornington Peninsula, most of these vineyards are now in excess of 15 years old, with many more than 25 years old.
The elevated acid levels and balanced flavour that comes with cool vintages like 2020 produce wonderful Chardonnay with understated class and finesse. Stylistically, the 2020 vintage shares similarities with the 2017 vintage, another cool season, and it certainly sits comfortably alongside the many great Chardonnay vintages from our region.
Aroma: Seductive sweet lemon florals with honeyed hints of oak spice.
Palate: A welcoming luscious mouthfeel, helped by the full malo-lactic fermentation, but there is also a lovely composed refinement to the palate that only comes with cool years like 2020. Flavours are very much in the classic realm, with sweet lemon and pink grapefruit, with balanced intensity and subtle firm acidity driving a persistent and long finish. One of the great Chardonnay years.
